The tarantula should be put in a size appropriate container like a condiment cup to prevent him from being thrown around but enough room that he can get into a comfortable position. Poke a few small holes around the sides for ventilation. Line the container with lightly dampened paper towel, NO WATER SHOULD DRIP OUT IF IT'S SQUEEZED (too much water can steam or get too cold depending on temperatures) put a piece of paper towel on the top, under the lid after the spider is in the cup. You can add some slightly moistened sphagnum moss but it is not necessary if the paper towel provides enough cushion. It should not be packed tightly or dripping water if squeezed. This way he can move but not get injured when shipped and stay hydrated. Check that the lid of the cup is secure. You can put tape over it if you think it may pop off. Another way is to pack him in a vial by lining it with moistened paper towel. I've included pictures of both methods.
The box will need foam board insulation to protect from weather and damage. Crumple a sheet of newspaper and place along the bottom and sides of the box to support and cushion the spider's container. The container the spider is in should be put in so that the spider can sit in a natural position. Once the container is in the box fill big gaps with newspaper and place another crumpled sheet on top then the foam lid piece. Tape the box and put a live animal sticker on the side of the box.
Temperatures and weather- Check with us before you ship to see if you will need to include a heat or cold pack. If a heat pack is needed it should only be a type for shipping with animals. If it is a cold pack, put it in a ziplock bag to keep water from getting anything wet. These must be separated from the spider with foam board to protect the tarantula. DO NOT squeeze the pack tightly between the boards, there has to be enough room to allow air flow around the pack, (a sheet of crumpled paper wrapped around the pack will will help keep the board from falling on the pack) cut the separation board about an inch shorter than the lid to allow the heated or cooled air to circulate in the box.
